พระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวร

สิ่งสำคัญที่ผู้ปฏิบัติธรรมหรือนักเรียนนักศึกษาพระพุทธศาสนายังไม่ค่อยเข้าใจกัน ก็คือเหตุใดพระพุทธศาสนามหายานจึงถือว่า พระโพธิสัตว์ระดับสูงเช่นพระอวโลกิเตศวร หรือพระแม่ตารา จึงบรรลุพระนิพพานแล้วแต่ยังอยู่ดูแลสรรพสัตว์อยู่ แถมยังสามารถ “แบ่งภาค” หรือสร้าง “นิรมาณกาย” มาเกิดในร่างมนุษย์ เช่น ชาวพุทธทิเ้บตถือกันว่า สมเด็จดาไลลามะทรงเป็น “นิรมาณกาย” หรือ “กายนิรมิต” ของพระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวร ที่ไม่ค่อยเข้าใจกันก็คือว่า เหตุใดพระโพธิสัตว์อวโลกิเตศวรนั้น บรรลุนิพพานไปแล้ว แต่ก็ยังดำรงอยู่เพื่อคอยช่วยเหลือสรรพสัตว์ เป็นไปได้อย่างไรที่ผู้ที่บรรลุนิพพานแล้วจะยังดำรงอยู่?

ก่อนจะตอบคำถามอันสำคัญนี้ เราต้องทำความเข้าใจก่อนว่า พระพุทธศาสนามหายานถือว่า มีพระนิพพานอีกแบบหนึ่งต่างหากจากพระนิพพานแบบที่มีอยู่ในเถรวาท พระนิพพานที่มีอยู่ในเถรวาทนั้นเป็นสภาวะอันดับทุกข์โดยสิ้นเชิง หมดสิ้นเชื้อที่จะทำให้มาเกิดอีกในสังสารวัฏ พระพุทธเจ้าศากยมุนี กับพระอรหันต์ทั้งปวงต่างก็บรรลุพระนิพพานนี้ ท่านเหล่านี้จึงไม่มีใครมาเกิดอีก และเราก็ไม่ควรพูดว่า ท่านเหล่านี้ “ดำรงอยู่” เช่นอยู่ในสวรรค์ชั้นใดชั้นหนึ่ง ซึ่งเป็นไปไม่ได้ เพราะสวรรค์ไม่ว่าชั้นใดก็เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของสังสารวัฏทั้งสิ้น ท่านเหล่านี้หมดสิ้นซึ่งเหตุที่จะเกิดใหม่ ถือชาติภพใหม่อีกต่อไป เนื่องจากการดำรงอยู่ในสังสารวัฏนั้นเป็นการดำรงอยู่โดยมีเหตุที่จะทำให้เกิดใหม่อีกต่อไป พระพุทธเจ้ากับพระอรหันต์จึงไม่ดำรงอยู่ในสังสารวัฏแต่ประการใด ดังนั้นจึงพูดไม่ได้ว่าพระองค์กับพระอรหันต์ทรงดำรงอยู่ ณ ที่ใดที่หนึ่งในสังสารวัฏ

แต่พระพุทธศาสนามหายานถือว่า พระพุทธเจ้าศากยมุนีนั้นทรงเป็น “นิรมาณกาย” ของการตรัสรู้ปรมัตถธรรมหรือพระอนุตตรสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณ พูดง่ายๆก็คือว่า ทรงเป็นตัวแทนของการรู้แจ้งที่ทำลายอวิชชาจนหมดสิ้น เป็นการ “ตรัสรู้” ที่ทำลายมูลเหตุของความทุกข์ทั้งสิ้นทั้งปวง และตัว “ความรู้” หรือ “การตรัสรู้” นี้เองที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงเป็นตัวแทน ความรู้อันยิ่งหรือที่เรียกว่าพระสัมโพธิญาณนี้ไม่ขึ้นกับกาลเวลา พระพุทธเจ้าอาจประสูติมาในตระกูลศากยะเมื่อกว่าสองพันปีก่อน ดำรงพระชนมชีพอยู่แปดสิบพรรษา นั่นเป็นเพียง “กายเนื้อ” เท่านั้น แต่พระสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณนั้นไม่มีการเกิด ไม่มีการดับ เป็นสภาวะที่ดำรงอยู่นอกเหนือกาลเวลา เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ เราก็มีวิธีการพูดเพื่อให้เข้าใจง่ายขึ้นว่า พระพุทธองค์นั้นทรงเป็น “รูปกาย” หรือ “กายเนื้อ” หรือ “นิรมาณกาย” ซึ่งแปลว่า “กายนิรมิต” เท่านั้น แต่ก็ยังทรงเป็นตัวแทนของ “ธรรมกาย” หรือ “กายแห่งธรรม” ซึ่งก็ได้แก่พระสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณนี้เอง พูดอีกอย่างหนึ่งก็คือ พระพุทธเจ้าศากยมุนีนั้น ทรงปรากฏพระองค์มาเป็นกายเนื้อให้ผู้คนเห็นได้ จับต้องได้ ฟังพระสุรเสียงได้ ฯลฯ เพื่อยังประโยชน์ให้แก่สรรพสัตว์ ให้สรรพสัตว์ได้มีโอกาสฟังคำสอนของพระองค์ ซึ่งแท้จริงแล้ว พระองค์กับธรรมกายอันได้แก่การตรัสรู้ธรรมนั้นเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน เพียงแต่เมื่อมองอย่างหนึ่ง จะเห็นว่าพระองค์ปรากฏเป็นเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะเมื่อสองพันปีมาแล้ว และพระวรกายแตกดับเช่นคนทั่วไป แต่มองอีกมุมหนึ่งพระองค์ทรงเป็นพระอนุตตรสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณที่ปรากฏออกมาเป็นรูปธรรมให้คนเห็นนั่นเอง

จากเรื่องพื้นหลังที่เล่ามานี้ ก็เลยได้ข้อสรุปว่า พระนิพพานสองแบบนั้นคือแบบที่เข้าใจกันโดยทั่วไปในพระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท กับแบบที่มีเฉพาะในมหายาน เรียกว่า “อประดิษฐิตนิรวาณ” ซึ่งแปลว่า “พระนิพพานที่ไม่อยู่นิ่ง” (non-abiding nirvana) หมายความว่าเป็นพระนิพพานที่ไม่ได้ตัดขาดออกจากสังสารวัฏ แต่ผู้ที่ดำรงอยู่ในนิพพานแบบนี้จะประกอบไปด้วยจิตตั้งมั่นที่จะช่วยเหลือสรรพสัตว์ จึงไม่ได้ดำรงอยู่เฉยๆในพระนิพพาน แต่จะออกมาช่วยเหลือสรรพสัตว์ด้วยวิธีการและหนทางต่างๆกัน ในแง่หนึ่งผู้ที่อยู่ในพระนิพพานที่ไม่อยู่นิ่งนี้ ได้ตัดขาดกิเลสทั้งหมดโดยสิ้นเชิงแล้ว ท่านจะอยู่ในนิพพานแบบของเถรวาทก็ย่อมได้ แต่ท่านไม่ทำเช่นนั้นเนื่องจากยังมีจิตที่ปรารถนาจะช่วยเหลือสรรพสัตว์ และตั้งปณิธานว่าตราบใดที่สัตว์โลกคนสุดท้ายหรือตัวสุดท้ายยังไม่พ้นทุกข์ ตราบนั้นก็จะยังอยู่ในสังสารวัฏเพื่อช่วยเหลือสัตว์เหล่านั้นต่อไป แม้ว่าตนเองจะได้พ้นทุกข์เข้าถึงพระนิพพานไปแล้วก็ตาม พระโพธิสัตว์ที่จะทำเช่นนี้ได้ต้องเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ที่บรรลุเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าแล้ว แต่ได้ตั้งจิตตั้งปณิธานว่าจะช่วยเหลือดูแลสรรพสัตว์ต่อไป ซึ่งตามคัมภีร์ต้องเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ที่บรรลุภูมิที่สิบในภูมิทั้งสิบของพระโพธิสัตว์ ซึ่งพระอวโลกิเตศวร พระแม่ตารา พระมัญชุศรี พระวัชรปาณี ก็เป็นตัวอย่างของพระโพธิสัตว์เหล่านี้

เรื่องพวกนี้เข้าใจไม่ได้ง่ายๆ เราอาจมองได้แบบนี้ คือเราอาจเปรียบว่าผู้ที่บรรลุธรรมหรือบรรลุพระนิพพาน คือผู้ที่ได้ขึ้นฝั่งแล้ว ไม่ต้องว่ายเวียนอยู่ในทะเลวัฏฏสงสารอีกต่อไป พระอรหันต์ทั้งหลายนั้นได้ทรงขึ้นฝั่งกันหมดแล้ว (การบรรยายว่าฝั่งที่ว่านี้เป็นอย่างไรนั้นทำไม่ได้ด้วยภาษามนุษย์ เพราะภาษามนุษย์เป็นการปรุงแต่งทั้งสิ้น ดังนั้นการบอกว่าฝั่งนี้เป็นเหมือนสถานที่หรือวิมาน ฯลฯ จึงเป็นการเข้าใจผิดทั้งหมด)  พระโพธิสัตว์ที่บรรลุภูมิที่สิบ เช่นพระอวโลกิเตศวร ก็ขึ้นฝั่งแล้วเหมือนกัน แต่ท่านไม่ทรงพอใจที่จะอยู่แค่บนฝั่ง แต่ท่านตั้งใจจะลงไปว่ายกับสัตว์โลกในวัฏฏสงสารด้วย เพราะสงสารสัตว์โลกเหล่านั้นเหลือประมาณ เมื่อไปว่ายท่านก็ทรงปรากฏพระองค์เป็นรูปแบบต่างๆ อันเป็นตัวแทนของความเมตตากรุณาอันเป็นคุณสมบัติประจำของพระองค์ การปรากฏพระวรกายนี้ก็เป็นแบบเดียวกับที่พระอนุตตรสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณปรากฏออกมาเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าศากยมุนีที่ได้พูดไว้ข้างต้นนั่นเอง

เมื่อเป็นเช่นนี้ เราก็มองเห็นว่าจริงๆแล้วคำสอนของเถรวาทกับมหายานนั้นก็ไม่แตกต่างกันในเนื้อหาสาระ ทั้งสองฝ่ายเข้าใจพระนิพพานตรงกัน เพียงแต่มหายานมีการเน้นเพิ่มเติมว่ามีพระนิพพานอีกแบบหนึ่งที่ผู้บรรลุนิพพานแบบนี้ไม่อยู่นิ่งแต่สามารถปรากฏกายเป็น “นิรมาณกาย” ให้สัตว์โลกมองเห็น จับต้อง ฟังเสียง ได้ จุดสำคัญก็คือว่า เราไม่ได้เพียงแค่ทำความเข้าใจผ่านทางภาษาหรือมโนทัศน์ (concept) ซึ่งเป็นการปรุงแต่งล้วนๆ แต่เราต้องเพียรปฏิบัติเพื่อกำจัดมูลเหตุต้นตอของความทุกข์ให้หมดสิ้นไป จากนั้นแล้วก็ขึ้นอยู่กับปณิธานของเราเองว่า จะมุ่งปฏิบัีติเพื่อเป็นพระอรหันต์ หรือเพื่อเดินตามเส้นทางของพระโพธิสัตว์ที่จะไปจบที่พระอนุตตรสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณเป็นพระพุทธเจ้า เพื่อที่จะสามารถช่วยเหลือสรรพสัตว์ให้พ้นจากทุกข์ได้อย่างเต็มที่

One of the most discussed topics at the 5th Asia-Pacific Computing and Philosophy Conference (APCAP 2009) at the University of Tokyo was about the ethics of robots. This is not so surprising given that Japan is one of the leading countries in robot technology and thinking about robots which look like humans and do things that humans can do naturally make it necessary to ponder how these powerful robots can behave ethically. Robotic technology has advanced to such an extent that it is not far fetched any more to start thinking seriously about robots which are capable of making autonomous decisions and even can think on their own. In fact robots have beaten humans in many areas that require thinking, such as chess and doing algorithmic mathematics. We need to be able to anticipate the time when robots can be conscious just like us, capable of using and understanding language. Since they will be much more powerful than we do, thinking, autonomous robots pose a very serious threat to human security. it is possible that even our survival as a species is at stake once the robots are capable of complete independence from human supervision and guidance.

So the main task of the emerging field “robot ethics” is how to design robots which are capable of making ethical decisions and behaving ethically. In order to do that it is necessary to understand fully what really makes an action “ethical” and what principles lie behind ethical behavior. This is not an easy task at all. In the end thinking about robot ethics makes us understand ourselves better. Why are we ethical beings? What kind of mechanism lies behind ethical behavior? How can we teach someone to understand the need for ethics? These questions are important for us as much as for the emerging autonomous and conscious robots, perhaps more.

The conference started with a keynote talk by Hiroshi Ishiguro, who gained worldwide fame through his research on producing lifelike and humanlike robots, which he calls “geminoid.” The word comes from the zodiac gemini, whose constellation resembles a twin. So ‘geminoid’ means something like a smaller twin. Let us look at a picture of Ishiguro and his robotic twin:

Ishiguro also showed this picture during his talk in Tokyo, but I kind of forgot who was the real Ishiguro and who was the geminoid. My guess is that the one on your right is the real professor, but the left one is the geminoid. Ishiguro talked about how he engineered the geminoid. He said that he installed a sense of ‘touch’ to the robot so that if you touch it, it can make some kind of responses. He showed a video of another robot which does not look like a human. Somebody touched the robot on various parts of its body, and it trained its head to look at the source of the touch and even watched up to see who is touching it. The geminoid also has the capability of “talking” (through speaker) and it can make a variety of making facial expressions.

All these bring us to think whether the robot can have a soul. Of course Buddhism does not recognize an eternal soul, but metaphorically we can certainly talk about a being who has a ’soul,’ meaning that it has a mind, thoughts, feelings, emotions. If we can finally have a robot which can really think just like we humans do, then does the robot have a soul in the same way that people say we humans have a soul? By having a soul, I mean the kind of inner representation. I represent to myself, thinking about myself and set myself apart from everything else in the universe. If the robot is fully conscious, it has to be able to do the same in every respect. That is, it must be able to think in terms of the subject and the object. It must be able to represent itself to itself and see that itself is completely different from whatever is outside. In other words, the conscious robot has to have a sense of the ego. It has to be able to refer to itself using the first person pronoun, ‘I.’

But if this is the case, then robots are no different from humans. As humans are capable of becoming released from the bondage of samsara in this very life, so can the fully humanlike robots. If the robot can represent to itself using the first person pronoun, then what this means is that the robot falls under the spell of ignorance (avidya), believing that there is an ‘I’ that is the core of the person in need of great care and protection.

I have said that thinking about thinking robots can provide us with insights on how to understand a human being. If a robot can have consciousness, then consciousness does not require a presence of an eternal soul that animates an organism. Only what is there physically suffices. Buddhism has nothing against that. But then there is the question how we can account for the inner life, the subjective experience that all of us have? This may be something that is not there substantially in the world. It is only our representations to ourselves, leading to our attachment and unchecked belief in the ‘I,’ that gives us a sense of there being a concrete, substantial ‘I’ that look so formidable.

So perhaps this implies that Buddhism would have less against robots than the other religions, especially those that insist that human beings were created in the image of God. However, Buddhism does have its own problem. If robots and humans in the end are not too different, then it must be possible for a human being to be born again as a robot, and vice versa? This question obviously did not make it to the Tokyo conference, but it does merit serious consideration, I think.

One of the teachings given by Nyima Dakpa Rinpoche at the construction ceremony of the Tara Great Stupa in Hua Hin was that we should constantly be at the present moment. The past is already passed. We can’t bring the past back. The future does not yet happen. So if we keep on thinking about either the past or the future, then we are actually living in a dreamworld. Only the present is real. It is only in the present, the ‘now,’ that we are totally alive and that we are capable of doing anything. It is only in the present moment that we do exist, that we can make any changes, any transformations.

This is a simple yet profound teaching. We need to ponder what it means to say that only the present is real. We may begin by considering the past and the future first. Beings that are wandering in samsara do not live in the present. They are compelled by their past, by their worries, by habitual tendencies that cause them to perceive things in ways that are conditioned by their traces of karma. For example, we have a tendency to get angry when things do not go the way we want. Perhaps we get stuck in a traffic jam and we get annoyed and angry. We become angry because we are conditioned by our habits of wanting to satisfy ourselves and then when what we want does not come fast enough, we get frustrated, angry.

The karmic traces work at a very deep level, and most of us are unaware of it. We believe that we have an “ego” — our own selves — our “I’s”, that need to be taken care of and satisfied. This trace goes back a very long way. We long for satisfying this “I” and when we do not get it, the “I” gets frustrated, bringing about suffering. But when it is satisfied, the “I” does not stop there. It then longs for another thing, and another, and another, and so on without end. That is why beings wander about in the life cycle of birth and death. In fact the life cycle or samsara is nothing but the projections of our own minds which is conditioned by past action or karmas.

Likewise, when we think about the future, we are really thinking of what does not exist. We make plans and when the plan is not realized, we also gets frustrated. Some may be so obsessed with future plans that they become neurotic, losing touch with the real world. Rinpoche said that those who habitually think about the future include those want to procrastinate because they fall under the spell of their egos which want things to remain the way they are. Since dharma practice has a direct effect on the ego, the ego does not want us to do that. So it keeps telling us of all sorts of excuses so that we don’t start practicing. The ways of the ego are so wily.

So what do we do? We remain focused in the present all the times. At least that is the goal. By doing this we do not follow any thoughts and lose ourselves in those thoughts. In fact those who stay in the past or the future are those who lose themselves in their thoughts. They are being led around by their own thoughts, which they believe to be really meaningful and tangible. But thoughts are only thoughts. They are fabrications created by the ego to “make sense” of the world. The problem is that by “making sense” one ironically loses sense of the real reality, which just cannot be said of through words.

Which comes to another of Rinpoche’s teachings that day. One should learn how to say it without actually saying it. This sounds paradoxical, but Rinpoche asked us to ponder its meaning. This is a way of practicing the Dharma itself.

I just read a very interesting article on “The True Jihad” on  the Enlightennext.org website, and here is my response. Please read the article first before reading this comment:

Key to this article is that view that the inner jihad – inner spiritual battle against evil – demands the existence of the enemy, namely the ego. Thus the current mindset that tries to look away from evil, thinking that the evil should be brought to the fold and not be discriminated against, is a total humbug. We need an evil, so that author says, in order for our struggle to be meaningful. If we lost sense of the evil, then the evil will have done away with us all.

That’s quite a nice point. But it enters into some kind of paradox that is very hard to get out of. Bear in mind that we are talking about inner spiritual battle here, the kind that Jesus went through when he was tempted by Satan, when the Buddha was tempted by Mara, and so on. And the Islamic tradition certainly has it right on the spot when it identifies that the enemy of the spiritual battle is our own selves. In the end the largest and most meaningful spiritual battle is one raging inside our minds, when we can overcome our own tendency to the ordinary ways of living and thinking, which is no different from blind people rushing about from one place to another hitting into things. Buddha, Jesus and Mohammed taught that this is only because we fall prey to our own egos; their hold on us is so strong that it takes utterly strong effort to see through.

The paradox, however, arises when the author insists that the egos are real. He is correct when he says that if we don’t take our egos seriously, or if we want to “include” the egos so that they, too, could be liberated, then the whole spiritual edifice breaks down and we will continue running around as blindly as before. But then in the zest to defeat the ego we have to be very careful not to fall prey to it yet again. So the longer the ego is needed, the further still from the eventual goal of spiritual battle we will be. In our enthusiasm to kill our egos we seem to have brought back those very same egos through the back door without our knowing through our very enthusiasm. If we are intent on destroying the ego with hatred, then not only will we not accomplish anything, we will suffer from self hatred, which is completely as bad as any form of hatred if not more. The longer we are convinced that the ego is there, existing substantially, then we cannot defeat it. We might believe we have crushed it by brute force, or sheer will power, but then the ego is a very wily enemy, one which has a way to catch us unaware at any time. So it seems that if there is no ego, then no spiritual battle is meaningful, but if there is an ego, then fighting against it just brings it back.

So what do we do? That question lies at the very heart of the spiritual battle. We realize that the so-called “ego” is ultimately speaking just a creation of our own mind. This is not the same as not engaging in the spiritual battle. The slothful who does not practice has no way of spiritual advancement because he does not make any attempt to see. For him things are just right the way they are. They are completely under the spell of their egos. But the truly spiritual also realizes that reifying the ego creates the same problem. So the way out is first to identify the enemy, which is the sense of “I” or “mine” that has gripped us for so long and is the source of all our problems. Then we see that this “I”, this ego, is no more than an illusion. At first the illusion appears real because it is the face that it is perceived to be this way that is the source of the problems, then the only way to get rid of the problems is to realize that the ego is only an illusion, and has been so all along.

The mantra, Om A Ra Pa Dza Na Dhi, is the embodiment of Wisdom itself. It does not have any meaning, though it is said that the five syllables after the Om are from the first syllables of the five main teachings of the Buddha. The “Dhi” is the seed syllable of Manjushri, one we visualize when we perform a deity meditation on him.
